Even the ‘Right’ Moves Left

By Yisrael Ne’eman

In an article appearing in Ma’ariv right wing Knesset member Eliezer Cohen (known by his nick name “Cheeta”) accused his political adversaries on the Left of having led the country down the path of destruction through the Oslo Accords, their continual dealings with the Palestinians and the lack of any plans for peace.  He sees the Left as the root of Israel’s lack of deterrence and as a major cause of the Palestinian violence over the past two years.

The Left of course sees settlement activity, the plans of Greater Israel development and lack of compromise by the Right as major reasons for the explosion.  These arguments are not new.

“Cheeta” is a member of the hard line right wing Yisrael Beitainu (Israel is our Home) faction.  His plans for an agreement with the Palestinians include a cantonized autonomy in the heavily populated Arab areas of the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) and Gaza Strip, once all terror and violence is wiped out.  He did not mention how much land but a quick survey leads one to 35 – 40%.

PM Sharon speaks of giving the Palestinians 49.1% to begin a long term interim agreement, meaning there will be more in the closing stage leading up to a limited independence.  It was not long ago when many elements in what is considered the ‘extreme’ right advocated ‘transfer’ for Palestinians to other lands and annexation of the territories.

Certain members of the supposed Right have certainly moved leftwards.
