The Schadeh Elimination

25 July 2002

By Yisrael Ne’eman

Let’s face it, Israeli used too much explosive power when eliminating master Hamas terrorist Salah Schadeh by dropping a one ton bomb on his house.  Another fifteen people were killed in the bombing.  The action against Schadeh was more than justified as he is responsible for over 100 terrorist acts against Israel and several hundred casualties.

Because of fears of killing civilians Schadeh’s liquidation was postponed 8 times according to reports, this time it was expected that collateral damage would be slight, but the intelligence information was faulty.  According to Israeli Defense Minister Ben Eliezer, Schadeh was planning a mega-terror attack making his demise of the utmost importance.  It is unfortunate that so many civilians were killed and injured.

Initially there were reports of discussions between the Palestinian Authority and the Hamas about bringing a halt to suicide bombings and such supposed talks have received a fair amount of press in the west.  The PA itself says the two sides were far from agreement concerning any halt in attacks against Israel.

Innocent Palestinians killed in Israel’s war against terrorism still pose a moral dilemma for Israel and Jews everywhere.  However this must be weighed against the necessity of eradicating terrorism and keeping Israel safe from such evils.  Essentially Palestinian civilians are either collaborating with the terrorists and thereby deserve to share their fate or they are hostages held by a terror infected society led by a terror ridden and corrupt Palestinian Authority.  Their lives are in danger because of the Palestinian terror and not as a result of the Israeli counter terror.  Israel has every right to defend itself.  If the Palestinian terrorists want to use their own people as a human shield, so be it.  Israel will do its best not to hit innocent civilians but unfortunately accidents will happen.  One should remember the terrorists are responsible for any casualties among their hostages.

It is interesting to note that even though the new Group Four of the US, UN, Europe and Russia have made some noises of discontent, none are taking any action against Israel.  Although not for the TV cameras one suspects they understand the Israeli dilemmas and actions, but can only say so privately.
