Kofi Anan: A Selective Memory

14 November 2002

By Yisrael Ne’eman

UN Sec. General Kofi Anan is at it again.  In a speech at the University of Maryland he roundly condemned Israel for stealing Palestinian land for new settlements.  Anan previously condemned Israel for massacres in Jenin only to be proven wrong by investigators and declared the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza “illegal” only to be warned by judicial experts that this is not the case.  In Jenin there were 52 Palestinian casualties, 45 armed Palestinians and 7 civilians caught in the crossfire and as for ‘occupations’ they are a status which have certain legal statutes and behavior which must be followed.  An armed uprising is a theatre of war and no longer an ‘occupation’.  At the time he also forgot to mention the full Palestinian control over Area A’ and the Oslo process of agreed upon gradual Palestinian statehood.

Now he is referring to the proto-caravan settlements, many of which are on lands bought by Israeli West Bank activists who advocate full Jewish development in Judea and Samaria.  Anan refuses to relate to the fact that many Palestinians sold their lands to Jews.  Does Anan deny the rights of Jews and Arabs to engage in land sales?  It is true however, other proto-settlements are on public lands ministered by the state of Israel.

He claims Israel blocks the way to peace, stating firmly Israel will have to relinquish almost all Palestinian areas.  Is this not what former PM Barak offered PA Chairman Arafat at Camp David 2000?  And is it not clear to Anan by now that Arafat initiated the violence when he could have had an independent Palestinian state by now on well over 90% of the area in question?  The Israeli government was willing to take down most of the settlements, even those on land bought privately from West Bank Arabs.

It is about time Anan condemned Yasir Arafat as a ‘war criminal’ for financing, arming and sending on missions suicide/homicide bombers to murder innocent civilians in Israel.  But such a condemnation is far too difficult since he would face the wrath of dozens of Arab and Moslem countries.

Lambasting Israel at every opportunity is far more important.
