Insurrectionist Rabbis

22 October 2002

By Yisrael Ne’eman

Several rabbis supporting the illegal settlement efforts in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) have called on soldiers to refuse orders to evacuate residents from these areas.  Rabbis Zalman Melamed, his son Eliezer Melamed and Nahum Rabinowitz have issued calls essentially for an insurrection.  Nothing could be more damaging for the army or the state of Israel should their voices be heeded.  The rabbis have been condemned not only by the Left but by the Right as well (including National Religious Party leader Effi Eitam who favors illegal settlements).

It is time to put an end to the settler revolt and the ‘spiritual’ leadership backing the violence.  Extreme right wing actions must be crushed within the legal statutes of the state.  Calling on the army to refuse orders is certainly a reason to take action against the rabbis who may believe they are above the law.

Such government actions will also be a warning to the extreme Left who constantly undermine law and order by refusing to serve in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and often incite against the state of Israel.  Here certain ‘academics’ and ‘intellectuals’ see themselves as above the law.

One can be sure they are waiting to see what happens to the rabbis on the extreme Right.
