Hamas Female Bomber

16 January 2004

By Yisrael Ne'eman

Rim Salah A-Rish is the first female suicide bomber in the ranks of the Hamas. Ahmed Yasin, the wheelchair bound Hamas leader sees the suicide-homicide bombing by A-Rish at the joint Israeli-Palestinian Erez industrial zone and check post (for workers going into Israel) as a new stage in the battle against Israel. Although there are plenty of male suicide bombers available, Yasin believes the attack, which left four Israeli soldiers and police dead, will catalyze the Hamas activists into further attacks against Israel. It is also reported by Israel’s Channel 2 TV that he personally gave the orders for the attack.

Several lessons are to be learned from the attack by A-Rish. Firstly, she told the soldiers that she had a piece of platinum in her leg and therefore the metal-detection machine would sound off, which it did. Not suspecting any foul play they accompanied her to a room where she was to be routinely inspected by a female soldier. On the way she activated the bomb. Israeli compassion was exploited in the most miserable manner, since had anyone been suspect of her actions the soldiers would have pinned her arms behind her back immediately when the machine buzzed.

The Hamas will never accept a hudna, or Islamic cease-fire. For the past 14 months the Egyptians have been trying to arrange a hudna, but have come up empty handed. Lest one forget, a hudna is meant as a cease-fire in order to rearm, and not to arrive at any form of conflict resolution. Discussion of Israel letting up on targeted removals of terrorist leaders should be trashed. Sheikh Yasin and his cohorts continue to wait for the opportune moment to kill Israelis, and only yelp for international pressures to impede Israeli actions when they feel physically threatened. Recently Israel has relented (although there have been a few removals in any case) and we see the results.

The only policy to work against the Hamas (and the Islamic Jihad) is a continual operation of “search and destroy” to wipe out their leadership, with Sheikh Yasin at the top of the list. The Palestinian Authority has sworn not to stop terrorism, and here, they can be taken at their word.

The PA gives silent support to the suicide-homicide bombers and their attempts to destroy Israeli-Palestinian economic cooperation. Over 4000 Palestinian workers are employed in the Erez industrial zone, working for both Jewish and Arab entrepreneurs. Another 20,000 Palestinian workers are crossing into Israel every day. Terror attacks result in the closing of the terminal and industrial area for several days while security is reorganized. Just before the outbreak of Palestinian violence three and a half years ago, Israel planned to lay the cornerstone for a similar enterprise in the Jenin area, but the effort was stymied.

Not only did the PA blame Israel for the A-Rish bombing but none of their representatives showed up for a meeting with Israeli officials who just this week were attempting to get the Jenin project off the ground, once again. The PA is only interested in staying in power and keeping their population completely impoverished to ensure no challenge to their leadership.

Supporting violence against Israel is one of the best methods used to attain their goals.
